John L. Bruce was born on January 12, 1918. He was the son of Lawrence Orr Bruce and Suella Mary Davis Bruce.

John served in the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He died in England on May 4, 1944, aboard P-47D #43-25516. Upon returning to base from a radio relay mission, flying his aircraft with full 150-gallon wing tanks, Bruce had pulled his landing pattern too tight and slipped into the ground. He died later on that day of injuries.

2Lt Bruce is now buried in the Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, USA.
