Walter Malone Baskin was born on December 25, 1922, in Mississippi. He was the son of Weldon Baskin and Lucile Wilson Baskin.

Walter served in the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as a Fighter Pilot during World War II. He was killed in a flying accident on February 13, 1945, in England, aboard 44-15642. On a training flight, Lt Baskin was engaged in simulated combat with another P51D aircraft. He was observed to slice off a wing and fall into a flat spin. He did approximately seven turns and hit in the mudflats of the Orwell River Suffolk, England, approximately 2 miles west of Trimley St. Mary, Suffolk. The cockpit of his plane burst into flames after it crashed.

1Lt Baskin is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He has a cenotaph located in the Vaiden Cemetery, MS.
