James R. Bartholomew was born on May 23, 1923, in Illinois. He was the son of Ross Bartholomew and Dora Hannah Guthrie Bartholomew.
Before entering the Army in March 1943, he was employed by the Aero Parts company of Wichita, Kansas. James received his wings in December 1943 at Tyndall Field.
At the time of his death, James was serving in the 863rd Bomber Squadron, 493rd Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Waist Gunner on the B-17 43-38352. He was killed in the crash of his airplane on September 12, 1944, in Hillerge, north of Gottingen, Germany. A crew of 9, SSgt Bartholomew was the only casualty in the group.
SSgt Bartholomew is now buried in the Vermont Cemetery, Vermont, Fulton County, Illinois, USA.
