John Matthew McGillis was born on June 21, 1921, in Duluth Heights, St. Louis County, Minnesota. He was the son of John Alexander McGillis and Gertrude Glenn McGillis.

John served in the 755th Railway Shop Battalion as a Private during World War II. He was killed on December 25, 1944, in an air raid or a V1 rocket attack during the Battle of the Bulge. He is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium. He also has a cenotaph located in Calvary Cemetery, Minnesota.
