David Pierce Kilpatrick was born on March 9, 1916, in Syracuse, New York. He served in the 848th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on the B-24 #42-94784 "Snafuperman" during World War II.
On June 22, 1944, his crew took off from Station 134 in Eye, Suffolk, for a tactical bombing mission to Brie-Comte-Robert, France. Hit by flak and fighter, the crew evacuated by parachute except for the Co-Pilot, who brought the plane back to the UK and made a belly landing. 1Lt Kilpatrick sustained multiple damages to the side of the face and was found dead in his chute. The rest of the crew, sans co-pilot, bailed out and escaped back to Allied control.
1Lt Kilpatrick is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
