Walter “Junior” Hayes, Jr. was born on January 20, 1922, in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. He was the son of Walter Frank Hayes and Marie Pauline Hardesty Hayes.
Walter, Jr. served in the 81st Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Fighter Pilot during World War II. He was piloting the Cessna Bobcat UC-78 #43-7528 when he was killed on July 2, 1944, in a plane crash in England. They were on a transport flight from Carentan to Chilbolton when his aircraft experienced an engine failure and crashed close to St. Mark's Church in Ampfield, England, killing all on board.
1Lt Hayes is now buried in the Huntertown Cemetery New, Huntertown, Allen County, Indiana, USA.
