Blythe R. Smyth was born on December 16, 1912, in Russell County, Virginia. He was the son of Blythe Deems Smythe and Mary Douglas Howard Smythe.

Blythe served in the 406th Bomber Squadron, 801st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Engineer/Gunner on the B-24 #42-52650 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on January 3, 1945, in the takeoff crash of his airplane. It crashed in the village on Aston Clinton in England, killing all aboard. Sgt Smyth is now buried in the Kendrick Cemetery, Rosedale, Russell County, Virginia, USA.
