Milton Joel was born on July 12, 1919, in Henrico, Virginia. He was the son of Joseph Joel and Minnie Weinstein Joel. He was married to Elaine Murial Ebenstein Friedlich.
Major Joel was the Commanding Officer of the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, at his time. On November 29, 1943, he was killed piloting his P-38H 42-67020 while on a mission to escort bombers attacking at Bremen, Germany. His aircraft was attacked near Oldenburg, Germany, by German fighters. He was able to elude the attackers, but his aircraft was damaged. Maj Joel attempted to fly the aircraft back to England, but he and the aircraft crashed into the North Sea and was killed.
Major Joel's body was never found. His name is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
