James F. Young served in the 66th Bomber Squadron, 44th Bomber Group, Heavy, during World War II. On 3 January 1943, on B-24D #41-23371, while serving as Ball Turret Gunner, the aircraft made a crash-landing near the crossroads south of Little Newcastle, Wales, returning from target U-Boat yards (submarine) at St. Nazaire, France. Fuel shortage caused the crash.

On 1 October 1943, on B-24 #41-23936 'Queen Anne,' the aircraft was attacked by fighters on a bombing run on Wiener, Austria. 2 crewmembers bailed out near Vienna and became Prisoner of War (POW)s. Pilot Oakley crash-landed in British-held territory near Foggia, Italy. Young was seriously injured and brought to the nearby British field hospital. His unit was on temporary duty with the 9th AAC.
