Dale Kingston Canfield was born on April 7, 1917, in Republic County, Kansas. He was the son of Charles Clinton Canfield and Ora Mae Hillbrand Nutter.

Dale served in the 66th Bomber Squadron, 44th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of the B-24 #41-23771 in World War II. On January 3, 1943, their plane crashed near the crossroads south of Little Newcastle, returning from a mission to U-Boat yards (submarine) at St. Nazaire, France. Fuel shortage caused the crash. Co-pilot Canfield was killed and the only crew fatality, several others were hospitalized.

2Lt Canfield is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
