Joseph L. Kilmer, aged 21, was born in Chemung in New York State to parents Leslie and Rose Kilmer. He was a clerk when he enlisted into the Army Air Force in February 1944.
Joseph served in the 749th Bomber Squadron, 457th Bomber Group, as a Flight Officer and Navigator on the B-17G #43-38812 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on December 23, 1944, when his airplane crashed at Great Rollright in England. They were on a flight from RAF Portreath in Cornwall to their home base at RAF Glatton, near Peterborough, when their aircraft hit trees and crashed 800 yards from Great Rollright village hall.
F/O Kilmer is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
