Reuben Edward Cartwright was born on May 27, 1922, in Mississippi County, Arkansas. He was the son of Marion Edward Cartwright and Sarah Nancy Moore Yates. He was married to Mary Ellen Polsgrove Cartwright.

Reuben served in the 705th Bomber Squadron, 446th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Gunner of the B24 42-51116 'Nature's Nymph' in World War II. On June 7, 1944, his airplane crashed at Rumburgh, England, killing eight members of his crew. Reuben was able to parachute to safety and survived the war. He died on January 13, 1989, at the age of 66, in Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas. He is now buried in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas.
