William F. Patterson entered military service in Pennsylvania. He served in the 43rd Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, as a Sergeant and Engineer on the C47 #4223479 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on September 17, 1943, on a training mission when his plane crashed while in a joint exercise with the RAF. Sgt Patterson is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
