Wayne Thomas Swanbery was born on October 17, 1919, in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Peter Swanbery and Arline Thomas Swanbery.

Wayne served in the 513th Fighter Squadron, 406th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of the P-47 D-27-RE #42-26928 during World War II. On July 26, 1944, he took off from A-13 in Tour-en-Bessin, France, on an armored support mission. He was Killed in Action when his aircraft was shot by flak around 10:00 am and crashed at Le Lorey - 5 km O from Marigny. 1Lt Swanbery is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
