Edgar J. Ashenfelter was born on January 22, 1922, in Montgomery County, Ohio. He was the son of Loyd Chauncey Ashenfelter and Ida B Whiteman Ashenfelter.

He enlisted in the Army on November 16, 1942, in Ohio. His civilian occupation at enlistment was as an airplane mechanic. Edgar served in the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private during World War II. He died in France and was declared Missing in Action on June 8, 1944. His name is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
