Henry William Dirks was born on April 6, 1909, in Gothenburg, Nebraska. He was the son of Henrich Dirks and Anna Marie Hirsch Dirks.

S/Sgt Henry was assigned as Platoon Sergeant (Military Occupation Specialty 651) in Troop B, 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), 7th Armored Division during World War II. He died on November 5, 1944, at the 8th Field Hospital, of wounds he suffered on November 4, 1944, in the vicinity of Kreijel-Waatskamp road, near Ospel, Netherlands. He is now buried in the Gray Cemetery, Coatsburg, Adams County, Illinois, USA.
