Claudius H. Chappell was born on 3 November 1911 in McCracken County, Kentucky. He was the son of Carlis H. Chappell and Rhoda B. Chappell. He was married to Ruth Marie Tucker Chappell.

Pvt Chappell was assigned as Light Mortar Crewman (Military Occupation Specialty 607) in Company C, 38th Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division during World War II. He died of wounds suffered on 3 November 1944 in the vicinity of Winnerstraat, Holland. He is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
