Sam Cathey was born on 22 December 1914 in Gibson County, Tennessee. He was the son of James R. Cathey.

Pvt Cathey was assigned as Rifleman (Military Occupation Specialty 521, Basic) in Troop A, 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), 7th Armored Division during World War II. His last duty location, where he died, was just north of Noordervaart, north of Hulsen, The Netherlands, on 22 October 1944.

Pvt Cathey is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
