Mitchell Amis was born on 1 April 1916 in Crockettsville, Breathitt County, Kentucky. He was the son of Robert Amis and Martha Deaton Amis.

Entering the military from Ohio, Pvt Amis was assigned as a rifleman (Military Occupation Specialty 745) to Company C, 38th Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division. He died on 3 November 1944 near Winnerstraat, Limburg, Netherlands.

PVT Mitchell was first interred in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Liege, Belgium. His remains were brought home in 1947 and now rests in Rose Hill Burial Park.
