Robert C. Young entered military service in Michigan. He served in the 328th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Group, Heavy, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was later transferred to the 436th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group.
First Lieutenant Robert Young lost control of his P-51D Mustang while attempting to perform a slow roll during an aerobatic display in Norfolk on April 22, 1945. His warplane, called ‘Ellie May’, was said to have exploded on impact at Gazebo Farm to the west of New Rackheath, a village five miles northeast of Norwich, England. He is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
