William B. McKay was born on 12 June 1917. He served in the 435th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and pilot of the P-28 Lightning #44-23160 during World War II.
2Lt McKay took off from Station 377 airfield in Wattisham, England, on an armed reconnaissance mission to the Marne Valley. He was shot down by the flak of the train he was attacking. He ejected the plane at 7:45 PM but did not survive the explosion of his aircraft. His plane crashed in the wood, 40 meters west of the road from Château-Thierry to Jaulgonne.
2Lt McKay was initially buried at the town cemetery in Reims, France, then to Champigneulles. His final resting place is in the Willow Mount Cemetery, Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee, USA.
