John T. Conley was born on 1 March 1922 in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. He was the son of Thomas G Conley and Emily Grace Wengler Conley.
John served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. On 18 August 1944, aboard P-51 Mustang B-15-NA #43-24813 WD*N, he took off from Station 356 airfield in Debden, England, on a machine-gunning mission. At 7:30 PM, while strafing a truck near LaFerte, France, his section was attacked by over 50 Me-109’s and FW-190’s. Unable to disengage from an e/a on his tail, his aircraft was seen to burst into flames after receiving many hits.
