Robert Clark Buchholz was born on 21 February 1924 in Oklahoma. He was the son of William Albert Buchholz.

He served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. On 9 April 1945, his aircraft (P-51D-10-NA #44-14389 WD-T 'Suzy') was struck by flak while strafing in the vicinity of Munich, Germany. With engine streaming glycol, he attempted to egress the area. Five minutes off the target, his engine caught fire and stopped while taking heavy flak. His aircraft then went into a near-vertical dive and crashed. No chute was seen.

1Lt Buchholz is now buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France. His name is listed on the Anglo-American Memorial in Saffron Walden in England, but his surname is spelled 'Bucholz.'
