George William Barnes was born on 1 February 1920 in Canton, Haywood County, North Carolina. He was the son of William Portius Barnes and Christina Scott Barnes.
2Lt Barnes joined the RCAF and later served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group. He was declared Missing in Action on 3 March 1944. He fell behind the squadron due to mechanical difficulties and joined up 336 minutes before it was attacked by 60+ German fighters. He was last seen over the Holland coast headed for the English base. 2Lt Barnes is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
