Vincent Richard Castle was born on August 16, 1916, in Illinois. He was the son of Gladys Berry Castle and Leroy Oakes Castle. He served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II and was piloting the P-47D-1-RE #42-7881 QP-E at the time of his death.

2Lt Castle was killed in a flight accident on June 19, 1943. His plane crashed just off the base while returning from a local flight. Witnesses noted he was “flying low and climbing. He reached the top of a sharp bank across the road from the E-W runway when his plane dived straight for the ground and went up in flames.”

2Lt Castle is now buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Bluffs, Scott County, Illinois, USA.
