Joseph Goetz was born in 1922 in Buffalo, New York. He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.
F/O Goetz flew with the famous 61st Squadron, 56th Fighter Group (Zemke's Wolfpack) before transferring to the 4th Fighter Group, 335th Squadron. A pilot of the P-51B Mustang #43-12469 WD*L, he took off from Station 356 airfield in Debden, England, at 11:42 AM, on a mission to Nantes and Bordeaux, France.
His aircraft was struck by ground fire while flying at a low level after strafing an airdrome. His fighter was seen to “pull up slightly and appear to stop in midair.” Moments later, it was seen to strike the ground and disintegrate without catching fire.
