Leo Dailey was born on August 5, 1922, in Hornell, Steuben County, New York. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee H. Dailey of Hornell. He was graduated from Hornell High School in 1941 and attended Alfred University.

Leo served in the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. On August 18, 1944, he took off from Sation 356 airfield in Debden, England, on an escort mission. While searching for ground targets, his section turned to attack a formation of 30 German fighters between Beaumont and LaFerte, France. Dailey broke off from the section to attack independently. He was heard on the R/T a few minutes later but not seen again. His plane crashed at Cambronne-lès-Clermont - 4 km south of Clermont, France.

2Lt Dailey is now buried in the Rural Cemetery, Hornell, Steuben County, New York, USA.
