Robert P. Claus was born in 1919 in New York. He enlisted in the military on February 3, 1941. He served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.

On April 8, 1944, he was lost during an engagement with over 30 German aircraft between Celle and Wittengen, Germany; not seen to go down. His current burial place is unknown.
