Corporal Pope earned the Medal of Honor for heroism near Hamel, France, during intense assaults upon enemy positions. His company was advancing behind the tanks when it was halted by hostile machinegun fire. Going forward alone, he rushed a machinegun nest, killed several of the crew with his bayonet, and, standing astride his gun, held off the others until reinforcements arrived and captured them. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Hamel, France, on July 4, 1918. His citation reads: "His company was advancing behind the tanks when it was halted by hostile machinegun fire. Going forward alone, he rushed a machinegun nest, killed several of the crew with his bayonet, and, standing astride his gun, held off the others until reinforcements arrived and captured them". His Medal was issued to him in 1919.
