Charles Dewitt Gellatly was born on January 15, 1914, in Hemphill County, Texas. He was the son of Charles Dewitt Gellady, and Pearl V. Gellady, of Beaumont, Texas. He jumped across the Canadian border and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, upon completion of training was assigned to Royal Air Force 83 Squadron flying the Avro Manchester. While on a bombing mission to Hamburg, Germany on 09 April 1942, while in Manchester L7427 OL-Q, the aircraft is shot down and crashed Northwest of Cloppenburg, Germany, killing Gellatly and 5 of the other crew members. They are buried together at the Sage War Cemetery, Germany.
