James Francis Cuthbertson was born on September 1, 1920, in Woodbury, New Jersey. He was the son of Jane and James Mclure Cuthbertson. He resided in Gloucester County, New Jersey prior to the war. James Francis enlisted in the Army on April 7, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.
James served as a Sergeant and Tail Gunner on B-26B #41-31597, 553rd Bomber Squadron, 386th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. B-26B #41-31597 was attacked and shot down by German Fighter planes and crashed just off the coast into the North Sea. Sgt Cuthbertson is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
