Andrew Johnston Hawkins, Jr. was born on May 24, 1919 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. He was married to Phyllis McNeil Hawkins. During World War II, he served in the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division as a Captain. He was included in the part of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division that landed by error in the sector of Quettehou, 25km away from their intended drop zone. These paratroopers stayed from June 6 until 20 behind enemy lines. CPT Hawkins survived the war and lived until his death on July 6, 1989 in Whittier, California, at the age of 70. He is now buried in the Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Los Angeles County, California.
