Richard M. Hoff entered the military service in Minnesota. He served in the 377th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group as a First Lieutenant during World War II. Flying a P-47, he took off from Headcorn, England on a diving-bombing operation to Bueil, France. He was last seen in a shallow dive being chased by two German fighters. His plane crashed at 0735hrs very near 49N/1E which is the approximate location of Elbeuf. 1LT Hoff is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
