Donald R. Gipple was born on October 10, 1917, in Alta Vista, Wabaunsee County, Kansas. He was the He was the son of Lewis G and Margaret B Gipple of Topeka, and was married to Vivian Myrtle Whiteman in 1939.

After flight training Donald was assigned to the 377th Fighter Squadron of the 362nd Fighter Group flying out of RAF Atcham, 5 miles east of Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Donald was the pilot of P-47 Thunderbolt 41-6578. He was mortally injured when he crashed on took off at Atcham, England on Apr 23, 1944. He died of his injuries on May 19, 1944. He is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
