Robert E. Mayfield was born on September 29, 1922 in Illinois. He was the son of Arthur Weiburt Mayfield and Edith Arminta File Mayfield. He served in the 364th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bom Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Radio Operator of the B-17 #42-31322 "Mi Amigo" during World War II. On 22 February 1944, the heavily damaged USAAF B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft Mi Amigo, from the 364th Bomber Squadron, based at Chelveston, Northamptonshire, was returning from a bombing mission over Aalborg, Denmark, during which it was heavily damaged by enemy fighter aircraft. Around 5 pm, engines faltering, it emerged out of low clouds and crashed in the park. The entire crew perished.

SSGT Mayfield is now buried in the Asbury Cemetery, Raymond, Montgomery County, Illinois, USA.
