Melchor Hernandez was born on January 6, 1921 in Texas. He served in the 364th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomb Group (Heavy), based at Chelveston, Northamptonshire, as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier of the B-17 #42-31322 "Mi Amigo" during World War II. On 22 February 1944, the heavily damaged USAAF B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft Mi Amigo was returning from a bombing mission over Aalborg, Denmark, where it had been attacked by enemy fighter aircraft. Around 5 pm, engines faltering, it emerged out of low clouds and crashed in the park. The entire crew perished.
