John Whicker Humphrey was born on July 17, 1920 in Stark County, Illinois. He was the son of Marion Guyre Humphrey and Cecilia Margaret Kinsella Humphrey. He served in the 364th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomb Group (Heavy), based at Chelveston, Northamptonshire, as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator of the B-17 #42-31322 "Mi Amigo" during World War II. On 22 February 1944, the heavily damaged USAAF B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft Mi Amigo was returning from a bombing mission over Aalborg, Denmark, where it had been attacked by enemy fighter aircraft. Around 5 pm, engines faltering, it emerged out of low clouds and crashed in the park. The entire crew perished.

2LT Humphrey is now buried in the Saint Dominic's Cemetery, Wyoming, Stark County, Illinois, USA.
