Walter Basinger was born on July 12, 1916 and was from North Carolina.
He served in the 358th Infantry Regiment of the 90th Infantry Division “Tough Ombres” in WW2. On May 1, 1945 while liberating the town of Díly, in the present day Czech Republic, he was killed in action. The town of Díly, in the Pilsen Region of Czech, remembers him and his fellow five soldiers killed on that day with a memorial in front of the Church Sv. Cyrila a Metodeje (St. Cyril and Methodius).

He was the husband of Juanita McFalls Basinger of Concord, NC.
He enlisted in the service on 05 April 1943 and served in Europe the following year. He was killed in Czechoslovakia on 01 May 1945.
He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the EAMET Medal, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart.
