Gerald S. Stambaugh was born on November 26, 1921 in South Dakota. He was the son of Glen S. Stambaugh and Mabel Hade Stambaugh. He served in the 337th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator on the B17 #44-6137 "The Abortion Queen" aircraft during World War II.

On January 29, 1945, while attempting assembly into a bomber stream scheduled to raid the marshalling railway yards at Bielefeld, Germany, his aircraft collided with that of Lt. Alex Phillipovich. Both aircraft exploded and crashed approximately 1/2 miles southeast of the airdrome. All 18 crew members aboard the 2 aircrafts were killed. 2LT Stambaugh is now buried in the Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, USA.
