Cyril John Mayrose was born on May 5, 1913 in Oyens, Iowa. He was the son of Joseph Christofher Mayrose and Frances Theela Heissel Mayrose. He served in the 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron as a Technician 5th Grade during World War II. T5 Mayrose was a member of 2LT Josefson's crew which on September 9, 1944, by mid-day, was the first to breach the Belgian border and enter Petange, Luxembourg. A hidden Wehrmacht cannon hit their armored M8 Greyhound Patrol car just as it approached a flour mill. 2LT Josefson was killed, and three others in the car were wounded. Gunner Cyril Mayrose, Technical Sergeant and driver Burt Magee, and Radio Operator John Mitchell escaped the car, which continued to burn for days.
T5 Mayrose died on February 12, 1991, at the age of 77 in Tempre Camp, Arizona. He is now buried in the Chapel Hill Gardens, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA.
