Ross Sumner Sykes, Jr., aged 20, was born on May 26, 1923 in Quebec, Kansas. He was the son of Ross Sumner and Rose Peters Sykes. He enlisted in the Air Coprs in October 1942, and served in the 382nd Fighter Squadron as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. Pilot of the P-51B-15 #42-106899 which took off from station 413 in Staplehurst, England, he was killed in the flight explosion around 1830h over Commune of Wavrin, France on May 1, 1944. He was initially buried at the town cemetery in Merville and later was repatriated to the US. 2LT Sykes is buried now in the Oswego Cemetery, Oswego, Labette County, Kansas, USA.
