Herbert F. Lyman was the son of Herbert Benjamin Lyman and Helen W. Williamson Lyman. He served in the 380th Fighter Squadron, 363rd Fighter Group as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was the pilot of the B-5 #43-6692 which on June 17, 1944, took off from station 413 in Staplehurst and flew in the No.4 position of the Hassock Green Flight to St. Lo, France on a dive bombing mission. They encountered enemy anti-aircraft flak, 3000 ft over Soulles and 1LT Lyman thought he was hit. Lt Thomas Tilson, flight commander, saw fire and smoke coming from the plane at 1000 ft. More light flak, Lyman's plane rolled at 500 ft and hit the ground. 1Lt Lyman stayed with his ship and did not bail out. He is buried now in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
