Donald J. Leemon was born in 1924. He was the son of Harley Leemon and Mildred Borden Leemon. He served during the Berlin Airlift as a Second Lieutenant in the 40th Troop Carrier Squadron and was a crew member on the C-54 #42-72476 aircraft.
On July 12, 1949, a night cargo flight from Celle AFB to Berlin-Gatow Airport, the crew encountered technical problems with both right engines (number three and four). The pilot lost control of the aircraft that crashed in a field located in Hohengöhren. All three crew members were killed. The aircraft was carrying a load consisting of ten tons of coal. 2LT Leemon is buried now in the Fort Howard Memorial Park, Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin, USA.
