Captain Lee Gillette of the 83rd Squadron, 437th Troop Carrier group was the Flight Surgeon aboard the C-47 Skytrain #42-100877 which crashed on March 11, 1944 in Axford, England. His crew attempted to retrieve a Horsa glider that had broken free in a practice mission. Although seriously injured, he survived the accident and returned to duty after 5 weeks in the US Army Hospital at Burderop Park, Wroughton, Wiltshire. CPT Gillette is still living as of March 2020.
