George C. Wassell, aged 32, entered service in April 1941, and at the time of his death was a flight surgeon with the 401st Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group, Heavy. A graduate of Notre Dame University, he also completed work at St. Louis University of Medicine and the United States School of Aviation Medicine. He served his internship at West Penn Hospital and was a staff member of the Buhl Memorial Hospital, Sharon, PA. CPT Wassell was a passenger on B-17F Flying Fortress #41-24451 that crashed in Mount Slieveanorra, near Cushendall, Northern Ireland while in transit to Great Britain due to bad weather. Eight of the ten on board were killed, including CPT Wassell, while two survived.
