Leiston Airfield (Station 373) and 357th & 358th Fighter Group Memorial
357th Fighter Group Roll of Honor
Louis E. Nowlin entered the service in the District of Columbia and served in the 363rd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. On September 15, 1944, 2Lt. Nowlin was Killed in Action while flying the P-51B Mustang coded B6-L “Flying Panther” based at Leiston, England. On the day he was lost, 2Lt. Nowlin was flying the aircraft of Captain Edward K. Simpson. 2Lt. Nowlin was involved in a mid-air collision with Lt. Kenneth F. Graeff; both men crashed into the English Channel. 2Lt. Nowlin was declared "Missing" and now is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
