Comments:
William W. Gambill was born on January 24, 1918. He served in the 363rd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group as a First Lieutenant and Wingman during World War II. His plane was shot down by flak and crashed at Mehringen, Germany while attacking three ME109s on a bomber escort mission to Berlin on March 8, 1944, in the P-51B #42-103041 aircraft. Gambill was later killed on March 23, 1944, during a British bombing raid while being held at a German interrogation center in Frankfurt, Germany. 1LT Gambill is now buried in the Union Cemetery, Union, Union County, Oregon, USA.
