James E. Colburn was born on December 7, 1920, son of Legrand C. Colburn and Mildred Smith Colburn, who graduated from Milford Central school. He entered service in August 1942 and was first attached to the Medical Corps. Starting preliminary training in December 1942, he won his commission and wings at Luke Field, Ariz., and left America for combat duty in April 1944. James was assigned to 496th Fighter Group and later transferred to the 364th Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group. A Pilot of P-51 #43-24763 aircraft, he was shot down in combat with Fw190's near Paris, France on June 14, 1944. He is buried now in the Milford Cemetery, Milford, Otsego County, New York, USA.
