Charles Rolan Callaway was born on April 28, 1925 in Montgomery, Alabama. He served in the United States Air Force as a Flight Officer during World War II. On March 21, 1945, F/O Callaway was piloting a B-25 bomber over Europe. His plane had just completed a raid on enemy territory and was returning to Corsica when enemy fighters attacked.
Callaway's plane was badly damaged and he ordered his crew to bail out. Finally after steering his flaming plane beyond a small village in Switzerland, he also bailed out. Unfortunately, his parachute failed to open that led to his death. He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. His final resting place is in Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama, USA.
