Jesse G. Maddox, Jr. was born in 1921 in Shelbyville. He had been a radio operator on a B-17 Flying Fortress, participating in what was the largest raid on Munich up to that time. Sgt. Maddox' plane crashed in Switzerland after being forced down by German fire following a raid deep into Nazi Germany. He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. Jesse is now buried in the Grove Hill Cemetery in Kentucky.
